Design Annual 2016 Spotlight Submission: Qatar

x Design Firm: Arcadian Studio | Clients: Virginia Commonwealth University

Graphis is pleased to present the latest entry in our Design Annual 2016 competition. The work of students at Virginia Commonwealth University were splashed across the pink-and-orange pages designed by Arcadian Studio in 3ajeeb! Tasmeem 2015.

The assignment was to design a catalog of student projects for the VCUQatar bi-annual art and design conference called Tasmeem. The projects were based on the conference theme ‘playfulness’ as expressed by the Arabizi word 3ajeeb! (ahh-jhee-b) meaning “strange in a strange way, cool in a cool way, and slightly weird in a slightly weird way”.

“The approach was to design a system that would allow all the student work to function on the same level of quality and visual interest,” wrote Nathan Ross Davis, the designer, on the Graphis portfolio. “This process became a sort of “3ajeebifier” through which nearly any image could reach the level of 3ajeeb.”

Arcadian Studio, a new Graphis entrant, is a multi-disciplinary design consultancy headed by designers Nathan Ross Davis and Jennifer Marie Davis. They specialize in identities, packaging, design work and branding.
