TED Talks: Stefan Sagmeister

Graphic designer Stefan Sagemeister has worked for the Rolling Stones, The Talking Heads, Lou Reed and The Guggenheim Museum designing posters and album covers that are both eye-catching and one-of-a-kind. However, even though Sagmeister is primarily known as an artist, he has spent much of his life trying to figure out how to achieve “Happiness”. Over the course of a yearlong sabbatical to Indonesia, Sagmeister looked at surveys and data about factors that contribute to “Happiness”. His goal was to train his own mind to feel an overall sense of well-being, and in June 2010, Sagmeister discussed his conclusions at TED Talks.

Sagmeister’s list of ways for designers to ensure greater happiness:

  • Think without pressure and maintain healthy deadlines
  • Travel to new places
  • Use a wide variety of tools and techniques (not only a computer)
  • Work on projects that matter (remaining close to content)
  • Having end results that turn out well
  • Working on projects that have visible impact
  • Designing projects that are partly familiar and partly new, with an ability to learn new things
