Massachusetts Designer Jan Šabach – Help Philippines
A self-initiated project to generate donations to the American Red Cross, Jan Šabach’s “Help Philippines” was a fitting poster in response to the super typhoon Haiyan and an outstanding addition to this year’s round of Poster Annual 2015 submissions. Additional Massachusetts-based Designers who contributed to the Poster Annuals 2012, 2013 and 2014 include Nancy Skolos and Thomas Wedell, Travis Robertson, Sophia Barkan, Katherine Hughes, Johnny Daigneault, Ben Scott, Stephanie Grey, Fritz Klaetke and Jeshurun Webb.
Šabach is a consistent Graphis contributor. His “Death Map (Anti Death Penalty Poster)” was represented in the Poster Annual 2012. His “Tiger Parts” won Gold in the Poster Annual 2012, and His “Ms. Foundation for Women — Logo & Identity System” was represented in the Typography Annual. Šabach explains the artistic process behind his “Help Philippines” poster in his own words:
“Like most Designers I felt helpless after the typhoon hit the Philippines. I can’t get on a plane a go help rebuild, my financial contribution is limited. But since I am in the visual communication business I decided to use my skills to help to spread the word and try to get more people to donate to the American Red Cross …The poster is my representation of despair and chaos. Help people affected by the super typhoon Haiyan.”
The poster competition features the most compelling and influential design of the year. Gold and Platinum awards, along with winning entries, will be published in the Poster Annual 2015. Submit your own work to the Poster Annual 2015 competition here.
