Ben Grandgenett — Houseplant Poster Series for Brooklyn Botanical Garden

Ben Grandgenetr, a student under professor Carin Goldberg at the School of Visual Arts, received a Platinum award in the New Talent Annual 2014 (soon to be released) for his series of posters titled, “Houseplant Poster Series for Brooklyn Botanical Garden.” Additional Platinum winning Professors from New York include Paul Sahre, Shawn Hasto, Louise Fili, Nic Taylor, as well as Bill OberlanderTheir students are Sherry Hsin-Ting Kuo, Dominika Kramerova, in addition to Ella Laytham, Sooyoung Jeon and Rina Joonwon Lee.AUSTRALIA DESIGNERS 3Professor: Jack Mariucci                                          Professor: Lanny Sommese    

Grandgenett currently works as a Designer for The New York Times Magazine. In the Credits & Commentary of the New Talent Annual 2014, Grandgenett explained his approach to the project:

My approach in rebranding the Brooklyn Botanic Garden was to integrate the scientific with aesthetic using archival vernacular with images of nature. My goal was to create a new voice that felt contemporary and bold, while still maintaining botany as the hero.

Carin Goldberg is a New York City native who studied at the Cooper Union School of Art. She worked as a Designer at CBS TelevisionCBS Records and Atlantic Records before she opened her own firm, Carin Goldberg Design, in 1982. Her book jacket design for the 1986 reissue of James Joyce’s “Ulysses”  is considered an icon of postmodern design. For a closer look at Carin Goldberg’s work, check out Graphis Issue 336, in which Ellen Lupton chronicles her career.

The Graphis New Talent Competition features the most compelling and influential design of the year.
