Photo: New Entries Are Coming In As the Final Deadline Approaches

Photography Annual 2019’s Final Deadline is tomorrow! Here are a few of our most recent entries…

By setting a scene with movement, props, or lighting, a photographer’s work can transcend image capture and move into the realm of creating unique art. A great example is Adam Voorhes’ entry, “Future Travel” (ABOVE). In it, he not only creates a sense of movement with a shot of walking legs, but also includes a surprising element that changes the narrative of the picture. While at first glance the people in the image appear to belong to a bygone era, with business attire reminiscent of the 1950’s, one of the women in the back has tattoos all over her leg and hand. This brings the setting of the photo into recent times, despite how the people are dressed.

In Staudinger+Franke’s new entry, “Plastic Ocean” (ABOVE, LEFT), the use of props help tell the story of a girl surrounded by water that has been littered with plastic. The amount of plastic in the ocean is a growing concern for many people, but for those who aren’t yet aware, this photograph quickly explains the problem and ignites viewers’ emotions. Another new entry, “Light + Shadow” (ABOVE, RIGHT) by Frank P. Wartenberg shows the ways in which the right shadow work can change the mood of the image and asks that the viewer think about what else may exist beyond the borders of the image. For example, it is clear to see that the shadows on the woman are the result of a nearby plant. Plus, the stripes that the leaves create along the woman’s face and body add new dimension and attitude to her look.
We can’t wait to see more creative choices that photographers make for the Photography Annual 2019 competition!
