From Germany, Photographer Frank P. Wartenberg wins Gold with his entry for the Photography Annual 2019. Shot for Picture Press, the seven-part series features actress Patricia Meeden and her abilities as a dancer. After shooting portraits, Wartenberg took the opportunity to take dance pictures of Meeden, having learned that she went to a special dance school as a child. Entitled “Patricia” (above), the series highlights Meeden’s strength, body control, and years of dance training. Against a black background, Meeden captures the viewer’s focus as her dress flows with every movement. Wartenberg’s Gold-winning entry is both magical and powerful.
The latest entry for the Photography Annual 2020 competition comes from photographer Chris Santucci in the U.S. Inspired by the Andrew Wyeth painting, “Christina’s World,” Santucci created a photographic homage of the iconic American mid-20th century painting. He rented out a location on a hill and utilized natural lighting to accomplish the shot. Entitled “Wyeth homage” (above), the photo maintains the sense of desolation found in the original painting. With this entry, Santucci combines classic art and modern photography, invoking a timeless perspective.
