In Memoriam – Roberto Guerra

Roberto Guerra, a beloved New York-based documentary filmmaker, died last month on January 10th after a gallant battle against pancreatic cancer.

A filmmaker with a unique style and spontaneous grace, Roberto’s films feature the portraits of fashion and design artists across the world. While his films are broad-ranging in scope, they reveal an intimate look into the work and creative process of his subjects.

Guerra and his wife, Kathy Brew, co-produced and co-directed their most recent film, Design is One, a feature documentary about the legendary design duo of Massimo and Lella Vignelli. The film premiered to a standing-room-only crowd in New York as the opening night film at the Architecture and Design Film Festival in October 2012 and is now being distributed nationally by First Run Features and in Canada by KinoSmith, along with other international screenings at festivals and other design events. The film highlights the humorous and insightful wisdom of a couple that has left a lasting mark on the entire nation, designing everything from the New York subway system to  logos for Bloomingdales, American Airlines and Ford and much, much more.  And Massimo Vignelli designed the poster for the film.

Roberto’s films have been broadcast in over 35 countries, including Paris, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Rome and Tokyo, and have been screened in major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Design is One will be shown in Los Angeles (March) and Chicago (April) as part of the 2014 traveling Architecture & Design Film Festival.  Below is a trailer for Design is One.
