Graphis Master: Kari Piippo Boldly Designed His Own Distinct Style

Graphis Master Kari Piippo is a decorated designer known for his striking poster design and illustration.

Kari Piippo founded his own studio in 1987, specializing in poster design and illustration. Since then, he has also taught at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Tama Art University in Tokyo and was the Honorary Professor at the Communication University of China. As a Graphis Master, his work appears in eight of our publications, winning Platinum and Gold.

Piippo’s work plays with bold color and perhaps bolder shapes. We can see this in posters that overlay hues on a recognizable image (ABOVE, LEFT) or arrange blocks to showcase text (ABOVE, RIGHT). The work is simple yet distinguished, and in the case of his posters, drives the point home immediately. Piippo has surely created a distinct style appropriate for any scale – be it a large poster or a postage stamp.
