Design: Gold-Winning Work and Exciting New Entries from NYC

As new entries come in for Design Annual 2020, we look back to see who took home the Gold.

“The Big Apple.” “The city that never sleeps.” “Concrete jungle.” These are all familiar phrases we think of when we think of New York City.
A Bird In the Hand” (ABOVE), one of our Gold-winning entries from NYC design firm Wallace Church & Co., was featured in our Design Annual 2019. Designer Stan Church and Illustrator Dean MacAdam had been “keeping an ear to the ground for familiar phrases [that] lent [themselves] to being illustrated.” For this piece, they took inspiration from the phrase, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush” for their promotional wine label. The intensity depicted in the bird’s eye and the apparent strain of the clutching boney fingers leaves a strong impression and creates a narrative to compliment the well-known phrase.

New submissions from New York City come in everyday, but the work of Toshiaki and Hisa Ide and their design firm IF Studio was too spectacular not to share. The striking textures and minimalist typography give this editorial project a highly professional quality that will surely draw readers in. Jugular Poster 3 (ABOVE LEFT) and Juglar Poster 1 (ABOVE RIGHT) have contrasting moods, showing us that this design firm is ready for their client’s potentially changing needs.
Whether from New York City or anywhere around the globe, we’re excited to see your entries!

Submissions for Graphis’ Design Annual 2020 Competition run until March 13, 2019. Winners will have the opportunity to see their work published on our website, blog, newsletter, and social media platforms!
