Graphis Master Kit Hinrichs is a U.S graphic designer and creative director who was a partner at Pentagram for 23 years before establishing his own agency, Studio Hinrichs in 2009. He has inspired and created long-lasting relationships with clients and designers such as Stefan Sagmeister, Terry Heffernan, Craig Fraizer, and Richard Danne who all praised the quality of his designs and work ethics in his Graphis Journal Issue #366 feature.

Hinrichs has been recognized by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, receiving the AIGA Medal in 2004 for his “exceptional achievements in graphic design and visual communications.” The above Platinum-winning poster, “8th Amendment of the Constitution Poster,” is among his presented works in the Journal.

Hinrichs’ experience touches a wide variety of design mediums. His promotional poster for the Corbus 365 Calendar (above, left) and “American Flag Book Cover” (above, right) for Long May She Wave, a book he co-authored, are some of the editorial works that he’s done. He is also experienced in brand identity, logo design, packaging, and corporate communications.

In his Q&A, he talks about his early influences, memorable projects, and imparts valuable advice for the next generation of designers. Read a few excerpts below:

What is the greatest satisfaction you get from your work?

I’m happiest when “I’m in the zone,” just after that “aha” moment, when you know you have a design solution and it is original and good. I also enjoy collaborating with talented illustrators, photographers, letterers, etc. I see my role as a graphic director, keeping the final vision in mind and assembling the right talent and giving them the latitude to do their best work.

Has your approach to design changed since establishing Studio Hinrichs?

I think of Studio Hinrichs as my Act III.  Act I was the years getting started in the design profession.  Act II was Jonson Pedersen Hinrichs & Shakery and my 23 years as a partner of Pentagram. Act III is being my own master, not a slave to paying the rent and making payroll.

Read about Kit Hinrichs and other top creatives, including photographer John Madere and design firm, Hufax Arts, in Journal #366. Now available for Pre-Order!
