At the heart of poster design lies the ability to communicate ideas that inspire, challenge, and provoke thought. Designer Carmit Makler Haller, owner of Carmit Design Studio, exemplifies this ethos through her thought-provoking posters Dynamic and Future?. These works, showcased at international exhibitions in Hefei, China, and Osaka, Japan, explore the fast pace of contemporary life and the transformative, often contentious, role of artificial intelligence in shaping our future. Through vibrant colors, dynamic typography, and innovative design techniques, Carmit invites viewers to reflect on questions of culture, technology, and identity. I designed this poster for the International Dynamic Poster Exhibition hosted by CEIDA (Chinese Europe International Design Culture Association) in Digital Hefei, China, in the summer of 2023. Using vibrant colors and dynamic typography, I aimed to capture the fast pace of contemporary life. The vertical layout and floating letters create a sense of fluidity, with drop shadows adding a 3D effect. This piece was honored with the exhibition’s highest award, the Award of Excellence.
Future?
I received an invitation from Osaka, Japan, to participate in the Osaka Poster Fest, 2023: Future Exhibition. There’s so much to say about our future—whether it’s promising, apocalyptic, challenged by climate change, or politically fraught. I chose to focus on artificial intelligence, a controversial topic that’s here to stay. AI is revolutionizing efficiency, delivering unexpected outcomes and brilliant ideas, and transforming the job market. Roles like AI engineering and AI generation are emerging, while others risk becoming obsolete.
AI now imitates the human brain in ways that seem limitless. It’s a powerful tool—but will it solve humanity’s problems or create new ones? What about issues like data privacy, ethics, and regulation? And what will happen to those who try to adapt but fall behind? I can’t help but wonder who’s truly at the helm. Will machines ultimately rule us? What kind of future awaits us, and is it a positive one? Only time will tell.
The enclosed poster conveys these questions through AI-generated textures and platforms like ChatGPT and Midjourney, layered over a typeface that resembles a nervous system. The layout’s data-overloaded design suggests a sense of organized chaos. A warm color palette hints at optimism, while a question mark on the final letter leaves room for doubt.
I want to thank Hajime Tsushima for the invitation. The exhibition was held at the Osaka University Arts Gallery from November 27 to December 1, 2023.
