Photographer Gabriele Viertel dazzled us in the Photography Annual 2016 competition with his wispy, dreamlike shot, titled “the virgin.” With an air of soft beauty and elegance, the model Nina Stoltenberg delicately posed underwater for this breathtaking photograph.
Based in The Netherlands, Gabriele Viertel is a German-born artist who grew up near Cologne. She is best known for her underwater staged photographs, and the magical, sensual, often surreal pictorial language and the chiaroscuro light are her characteristic means of expression. Viertel’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Europe and the United States and is located in prestigious private collections as well as the collection of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art and the University of Art, Rotterdam.
