Rory Sutherland — Life Lessons From an Ad Man

Happiness lies not in the circumstances of our lives, but how we perceive those circumstances, says Rory Sutherland at TEDx Athens: “Our job is to help people appreciate what is new, but also place a far higher value on things,” he says. “When you…learn to place the material value on what you’ve previously discounted for being merely intangible — a thing not seen — you realize you’re much much wealthier than you ever imagined.”

Mr. Sutherland is an advertising guru who hails from Ogilvy & Mather UK. He is a leading force in the current advertising revolution during the 21st century.

Mr. Sutherland, who joined Ogilvy and Mather in 1988 as a junior copywriter, quickly worked his way up to Vice-Chariman of the company. His background as a classics teacher, coupled with his work at Microsoft, allowed him to understand the possibilities of digital technology in the advertising industry. His column, “The Wiki Man” at The Spectator affords further insight.
